MATHAGAL releases the scary debut-EP uniting folklore, urban legends and horror tales!

MATHAGAL, a very heavy and original new project that mixes the rich Brazilian folklore with urban legends and horror tales, have released their debut EP entitled “Contos de Meia-Noite” (free translation: “Midnight Tales) on all streaming platforms on last October 31st, Halloween.

With an aggressive and modern sound, they bring a new and original concept, in Portuguese, of stories of Brazilian folkloric figures, urban myths, well-known and deconstructed characters, and others created exclusively for this release, all in a stormy and frightening horror tales way.

“Contos de Meia-Noite” is just the first release for this project that has everything to become unanimous in our country, and who know how to walk side by side with classics, such as, for example, “Roots” (Sepultura) and “Holy Land” (Angra)?

Well-known characters, such as Emilia, from Sitio do Pica-Pau Amarelo, in a way you never imagined, Chupa-Cabras, or even Aphastatupi, the famous ‘boogeyman’ that frightens children so much, a bloodthirsty aberration that is a reflection of human cruelty, are all part of Mathagal’s midnight tales. Juvi Cristofolini comments on “Aphastatupi” that “we created this freak, turned it into a brutal song and now even we are afraid of it (laughs)”.

About the song entitled “Chupa-Cabras”Raphael Jorge says that “writing it was something I always wanted to do, because when I was little I was quite scared by the stories that were told. Nobody knew if it was real or not! When we started the project, this subject came instantly to my mind and it was the first song we started to write. It has a lot of influence from Brazilian music, mainly from the northeast, with influence from New Metal and even Djent. A dream come true”.

To meet the project’s proposal, “Contos de Meia-Noite” also has a brutal cover of “Roots Bloody Roots”, honouring one of the great influences and references in this work, SepulturaGuilherme “Guigo” Adriano comments that “paying a tribute to a classic is already intimidating, but when it’s a worldwide metal anthem it was even more terrifying! Juvi nailed the vocals, paying the necessary respect and adding his characteristic guttural. Simply sensational”.

“Our lyrics are basically things we heard when we were kids and that scared us so much, everything raised to the fifth power in terms of horror”, jokes Raphael Jorge.

Another important factor for MATHAGAL is their visual identity, with extremely immersive horror art, by the Austrian AI Fantasy Art team, exploring the darkest and most evil side of the characters addressed.

In the words of Juvi Cristofolini, he says that “the result in “Contos de eia-Noite” was extremely brutal and you can be sure that we have a lot more coming from inside our troubled minds” (laughs).

The MATHAGAL project was born in Texas, USA, amid the insane and brutal ideas of Brazilian musician and producer Guilherme “Guigo” Adriano (Homoiousios and The Gee J), also counting on friends Raphael Jorge (vocals/100 Dogmas) and Juvi Cristofolini (vocals and guitar/Motim), both from Blumenau, Santa Catarina. Next year, the band plans to release an even more insane, brutal and terrifying full-length album! Get the kids out of the room!
